Kitchen Must-Haves

Like me, many obsessed foodies will go out of their way to get all kinds of elaborate, fancy and sometimes useless cooking tools for the kitchen. It’s hard but us cooks need to remember that we don’t need a lot of fancy gadgets or space-hogging equipment. I know I’m guilty with overflowing cupboards with food processors, electric squeezers, garlic pressers and other heavy machinery. Of course, it’s good to have a well-stocked kitchen, but sometimes it’s easy to overlook the essentials. Read on to learn my favorite kitchen must-haves that help me prepare my food everyday.

  1. Don’t be afraid of a sharp knife! What people don’t know is that it’s much less dangerous than a dull one. Knives and knife sets can be expensive, so buy the best you can afford and I promise  it will change your life, well at least your cooking. I recently bought a knife set with a block from Walmart. It has changed the way I cook. The knives are sharp, durable and have cut through pretty much everything I’ve thrown them at so far with ease. I would highly recommend the Walmart Mainstay’s cutlery set; it was only $20 and came with measuring spoons, a cutting board and spatulas. Whether you buy the knife set from Walmart or not, when looking for new knives, be sure to look for a chef,  paring and a serrated knife. These three knives will handle almost everything and anything you’ll need to chop.
  2. Knives are a good start, but what good are knives without cutting boards? You will find that cutting boards are necessary too. Don’t skip out on the cutting boards because they protect your counter top surfaces and minimize the spread of bacteria. I recommend you have two types of cutting boards. Wooden boards are good for fruits and vegetables. Plastic cutting boards are good for meat and fish. There is a lot of confusion when it comes to which one is better. Be sure to check out this site if you want to know which cutting board is better for you and your cooking needs. Now a days, there are so many more options than just the wooden vs. plastic cutting board. Take a look:
  • Index Chopping Boards: these boards are designed to avoid cross-contamination of food. These polypropylene cutting boards are color coded and stored in a plastic filing unit. In the picture below, it looks like green is for veggies, blue is for fish, white is for hot and red is for meat and poultry. So organized!
  • Cutting Boards for Tall Cooks: Luckily I don’t have this problem, but my fellow friend cooks out there who tower over me do. This one is for them! After chopping and cutting for hours on end can cause hurting lower back. This cutting board is adjustable to be comfortable for you, your height and a specific task. So my giants out there, check these out!
  • Instant Counter Cutting Board: Have a cluttered kitchen? Need more counterspace? If so, this cutting board is for you. It fits over a stove or sink to create instant prep surface. How convenient is that?!
  • Cut & Lift Cutting Board with Handle: If you’re like me, I cut by the sink and have to shift to the island to drop my prepped food into the pan. This cutting boards lets me do that with ease. It’s easy to pick up with its handle and slide whatever you were into your pan or bowl. Grab a handle!
